Child Counselling Ages (5-12)
We all want our children to have a happy and carefree childhood. Unfortunately issues can arise leaving some children with a range of distressing and confusing emotions; in the same way that an adult might experience, except that children are usually less equipped to manage such emotional changes.
At TG psychology we passionately believe that children should be able to live without unnecessary distress; and that by identifying and treating issues early we can help prevent childhood issues from becoming later adult issues. For this reason we offer counselling services for children aged 5-12, for a wide range of common childhood issues.
Our child psychology specialist, Joclyn Stanley has many years of experience in helping children of all ages, from working in private practice and public health settings, and from being a mother of two children herself. She is able to draw upon on a range of practical and professional knowledge about children and the challenges facing parents.

How We Can Help
Many children find it difficult to express their feelings to a parent and often benefit from talking with a trusted person from outside their own family. At TG Psychology we can provide your child with a safe space to talk about their emotions and everyday concerns. In our experience many children require just a few counselling sessions, in which they can talk through their difficulties and learn some useful ways of coping with them. Many learn valuable coping skills which they are able to use throughout their lives.
Counselling will be structured to involve both you and your child in the initial stages, enabling our psychologist to develop rapport and trust with your child. When they feel the time is right, treatment will gradually move towards one-to-one sessions with your child. This is because many children feel more comfortable talking about their feelings when their parents are not in the room. While counselling will generally be conducted directly with the child, parental support and involvement will continue to play an important part in the treatment.
Our psychologist will tailor a style of therapy to meet the age and specific needs of your child. For older children this may involve talking through issues in a similar manner to adult counselling, using age-appropriate language. For younger children our psychologist may use more creative techniques, including art therapy, sandbox play or storybooks, to engage your child in therapy, and to bridge the gap between verbal and behavioural expression.
At TG psychology we provide a safe place for children to feel heard and validated. Where appropriate we will develop collaborative relationships with other professionals involved with your child’s care. These may include your doctors, paediatricians, speech pathologists or school staff.
What Signs Indicate That My Child May Benefit From Counselling?:
